2012: Seven Un-Goals

I am not good at coming up with witty titles.

Anti-resolutions? Un-goals? Un-resolutions? Who knows.

The point, as I’m sure you have guessed by now, is that I’m not a person who has ever been a fan of formal New Years’ Resolutions.

Why? I dunno, they always just seemed kinda dumb to me.

Maybe I am a New Years’ Grinch of sorts. Bah humbug!

Anyway. I did think of seven {because seven is my lucky number, yo} “resolutions” of sorts for this year. But I don’t think that they should just apply to 2012; I think that they should apply to the rest of my life on this earth. They’re simple, because I like simple. And they’re easy, and I think you should try them out too, because they are not too difficult to incorporate into everyone’s daily lives.

Seven Simple “Anti-Resolutions,” by Darcie

1.) Floss more often. Flossing takes me approximately two minutes, and the only reason that it takes me that long is because I have a bar behind my bottom teeth {from orthodontic work} which requires me to thread floss through it. It should take the average person even less time, and it’s an easy way to improve your oral health, which I think that many of us take for granted.

2.) Drink more water {preferably with lemon}. I love water, but even I do not drink enough of it. However, staying properly hydrated helps your skin and overall physical health. Lemons add a nice burst of flavor and helps to keep the constant water-drinking less monotonous and boring. Now I’d just like one of those cute, reusable glass bottles to tote my H2O around! {I’m going to purchase one from the co-op store in Urbana sometime soon. I’ll post photos when I finally get one!}

3.) Eat more vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. I’m not going to completely change my diet, and I’m certainly not a health nut. However, I’d like to incorporate more healthful foods into my diet. Specifically, I would like to eat more whole wheat products, including cous cous. I’d also like to snack on mixed nuts, fresh apples, and dried cranberries. Nothing drastic; just some simple, tasty adjustments.

4.) Read more books. They say that the well-read individuals are generally more intelligent. I decided to use http://www.goodreads.com to organize the books that I’m currently reading, books that I wish to read, and books that I have read in the past. I dunno if I’ll become more intelligent, but I have noticed that reading does help increase my vocabulary, and I do enjoy reading…  I just need to make time to actually do it more often!

5.) Decrease negative self-talk; increase self-confidence. I, like many individuals, have a hard time shutting off that negative self-talk. But I’m working with my counselor on increasing positive self-talk so that I can learn to better love myself. I think we can all use some more positive self-talk, so I’m gonna start by naming one positive thing that I love about myself {forewarning: some posts may be entirely dedicated to this, haha!}: I have awesome, beautiful red hair.

6.) Go for more walks. Going for walks is an easy way to de-stress, improve my mood, and get in a little exercise. In addition, it’s a great way to practice mindfulness; that is, to take in all that is around oneself and enjoy the moment.

7.) Give someone a genuine compliment at least once a month. For some odd reason, I’ve always felt like a creeper when I hand out compliments. I don’t know why. That seems stupid, now that I think about it. When people compliment me, it usually makes my day. I really think that other people could use compliments more often, so I’m going to attempt to tell people that they’re appreciated, that I love their cute outfit, or that they look absolutely glowing. It will do both myself and other people some good, so why not?

Daily Inspiration: Ferris Wheel + Sky

I took this photo at the City Museum in St. Louis, Missouri.

It’s this rickety old ferris wheel that’s on the top of the museum. When you’re riding it, it feels as if all of the screws and nuts and bolts in the seats could come undone at any moment, and you and all of the metal pieces would go flying. But I guess that’s what gives the ol’ ferris wheel its charm, right?

I did a fun “1960s” Picnik edit {obviously my favorite “hipster-esque” edit of all time, haha} on this one, and I really like how the sun shines through the clouds. This photo reminds me of how much fun I had that day, exploring the museum and riding that ferris wheel, despite the fact that being on said ferris wheel was slightly … well, unnerving.

And that, my friends, is why I love photography so much.


Inspiration: Favorite Old Photos

This is one of my most favorite old photos of my mother and me.

How precious, right?

Yes, I did do a bit of “editing” on it – I used Picnik to do a “black and white” focal area – that is, I wanted the color of the photo of us to really shine through. And then, I added a cute little heart to express my love for my mommy. {Yes, I still call her mommy.}

I’m actually working on sorting through some of my favorite pictures throughout the years. Once I find my top five or ten favorites, I’m going to take some fun frames and make a little photo collage for the wall of my future apartment. And the above picture will definitely be one of the pictures in said collage!

Food for Thought: The Hollow Men

I’ve never been one to be extremely into poetry. However, in high school, one of my boyfriends introduced me to T.S. Eliot, and I was immediately drawn to Eliot’s poetry. It’s dark, mysterious, and weird. It doesn’t always make much, if any, sense to me. Yet… I find his poetry oddly calming and very intriguing.

Below is my favorite poem by T.S. Eliot, entitled “The Hollow Men.” It may appear weird when you just read it without context, but listening to someone with a beautiful voice read it? That’s the most soothing thing on the planet, in my opinion. Enjoy.


We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless

The Basics: Daily Makeup Regimen

I wear makeup rather sporadically. There isn’t a particular rhyme or reason as to when I decide to wear makeup. It all sorta just depends on my mood at the time.

When I can actually be bothered to wear makeup [which is approximately 56.3527% of the time, to be exact], however, I generally prefer a very simple and quick regimen.

I am not a fan of having anything caked on my face, so I usually just accentuate my good features: my eyes.

In the above picture, you’ll see the basic products that I use, all laid out in a fancy hipster fashion. Below I am going to list what each item is, since you probably can’t tell what the heck anything says since I took the picture with my phone and then did a cool “1960s” Picnik edit, because I am just that awesome.

As you can see, a few simple tricks makes me look much more awake and “put together.” It’s easy and it doesn’t take much time, which is what I prefer, because there are far more important things to worry about than how my face looks.

I am obsessed with this song. It’s one of those quiet, relaxing songs that I prefer to listen to before bed. Enjoy.


Cookbook Love

I received some pretty groovy cookbooks for Christmas…

…Some of which contain organic, gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan recipes. I do not have any gluten allergies, nor am I a vegetarian/vegan. Heck, I’m not even what I’d call a “health nut.” But I do enjoy healthy meals, and I am into trying out interesting, unique ingredients. These books are beautiful and should provide a lot of inspiration for the near future. Plus, they’ll look very classy on my pretty bookshelf that I am currently refurbishing. {Pics of the bookshelf progress coming soon.}

For as tech-savvy as I am, I sure do love physical books. There’s just something about holding the book – feeling its weight, turning the pages, smelling that “new book” smell, and drooling over all of that gorgeous photography – I just love it. I can’t help it.



Food for Thought: Life Can Be Much Broader

Think what you want about the recently passed Apple founder and his products.

But the man does have some good insights, particularly in the following video.

When you grow up you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life inside the world, try not to bash into the walls too much, try to have a nice family, have fun, save a little money. That’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader, once you discover one simple fact, and that is that:

Everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you. And you can change it, you can influence it, you can build your own things that other people can use.

Once you learn that, you’ll never be the same again.

This is why I want to do more. I am not okay with mediocrity. I want a good life, sure, but I want to do more with my life. I want to make a difference. Why sit around and do your best to be oblivious to life passing you by? If you want something to happen, you have to make it happen.
